This year Starfest coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower (August 12 – 13) which under a dark, moonless, night should be a spectacular event.  There is nothing more dramatic than seeing a bright Perseid streaking along the length of the Milk Way through the Summer Triangle and then watching the train it leaves behind twisted by the high-altitude winds.  Or, hearing the roar of the crowd, when a bright meteor lights up the sky, followed a few moments later by the excited cry of “I GOT IT, I GOT IT, I GOT IT” when someone discovers they had their camera pointed at just the right spot to capture it all.  This is group observing at its finest.  This is what Starfest is all about.  We invite you to join us in Catching a Falling Star.

As well a partial (15%) solar eclipse will be visible from Starfest on August 12.  To observe this event, we plan to hold a Solar Eclipse Watch Party in the Rec Hall.  A white light solar telescope will be setup outside (weather permitting) to provide real time images of the sun on the big TV inside the Rec Hall.  In addition, we will be projecting the live solar eclipse feed from TimeandDate.com who will be broadcasting totality from Spain.

You won’t want to miss these and other exciting Starfest experiences!  Come and join your fellow astronomy enthusiasts for this outstanding astronomical adventure!

Starfest is Canada’s largest annual amateur astronomy conference and star party attracting hundreds of astronomy enthusiasts from Ontario, neighbouring provinces and the USA.  It has been ranked among the top star parties in North America by Sky and Telescope magazine.
