“Hot Jupiters” … rocky, earth like planets … hycean worlds … exomoons

The study of exoplanets is revolutionizing our understanding of planetary systems, cosmology, and the potential for life beyond Earth.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a crucial tool to locate planets that are out there and better understand how planets form.  Transit studies use JWST’s infrared sensors to examine the infrared spectrum around stars for telltale signs of atmospheric molecules.  Those same sensors have already imaged galaxies, with surprisingly complex structures, created sooner than thought possible after the Big Bang.  During the Period of Reionization, those galaxies were hotbeds for star formation which made the universe transparent to light by absorbing surrounding gases from the Big Bang.  As stars were formed from the attracted gases became stars and, in the process, generated dust may have led to the development of planets in the ensuing billions of years.

Starfest 2024 will explore the latest advancements and discoveries in exoplanet research, from detection techniques to characterization methods and their implications for astrobiology and planetary science.  Our invited speakers will share their work with us and we ponder the questions of “Where are the planets?” and “Is there life out on those planets?”

You won’t want to miss this exciting Starfest experience!  Come and join your fellow astronomy enthusiasts for this outstanding weekend under the stars!
